Brutalo Deluxe 2 is a rather simplistic platform shooter similar to Soldat that is great for short bursts of fun. You take control of a single character and face off against multiple opponents in a variety of different levels using your choice of six guns and a handful of grenades.
Brutalo will surprise you with how fun it really is. The graphics are extremely simplistic and the movement can feel a bit stiff, but you will hardly notice when you are too busy spraying bullets at the (up to) five other bots and making their insides splat against the ground.
Each round is played up to a target number of kills, with a chance to switch weapons in between spawning. The weapons range from a pistol to a rocket launcher and everything in between, yet each weapon feels balanced. The sniper rifle is slow but can one-shot any target, the Gatling gun is delayed in starting up but extremely rapid, and all others behave as you would expect.
Brutalo suffers from a few design flaws, however. Most apparent is its lack of any sort of multiplayer mode. You'll have plenty of fun trying to survive more than a few seconds against some pretty tough AI, but it's not the same as testing your skill against others.
Another issue is the absence of recording what weapon you last used. When you die, you have but a few seconds to remember to push the number keys to pick a weapon, otherwise you will be stuck with a pistol. This is entirely unnecessary, as it should assume you want the same weapon unless you choose otherwise.
Overall, Brutalo Deluxe 2 is a surprisingly fun platform shooter that will kill more than a few of your coffee breaks.
